1. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE
Apologies for absence were intimated on behalf of Councillor G Garvie, Mr D Armour (Treasurer), Mr D Graham, Mr E Jardine and Mr M Cattermole.
2. MINUTE OF PREVIOUS MEETING
The Minute of the previous meeting held on Wednesday 24th May 2006 was submitted and approved.
3. MATTERS ARISING
3.1 WEBSITE WORKING GROUP
Mrs S Horsburgh updated the Committee on the construction of the Website, the Chairman had submitted his opening remarks for the homepage and the logo had been forwarded from Invision to EBS. The Working Group is to meet in the near future to progress things further.
3.2 SCRUTINY PANEL MEETING
The Chairman intimated that he attended a meeting of the Council’s Scrutiny Panel on the 30th May, the purpose of the meeting as to ensure the Sports Council’s are disbursing the Grant money from the Council using a fair and equitable system. At the conclusion of the meeting the Scrutiny Panel were satisfied the Sports Council’s are delivering a good service on behalf of the Council.
4. TREASURER’S REPORT
In the absence of the Treasurer, the Secretary circulated a copy of the Treasurer’s report. The Secretary intimated that the Sports Council’s working balance totalled £16,445.97, the Sports Council’s commitments to date totalled £7140. The Treasurer is to provide a full financial statement at the next Sports Council meeting. It was noted that £898 had been returned to Scottish Borders Council due to an administration error when distributing the Annual Grant.
5. APPLICATIONS FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
5.1 LINDA NICHOLSON – MOORFOOT RUNNERS
There was submitted an application from L Nicholson of Moorfoot Runners who was seeking financial assistance with her attendance at a variety of Athletics events and Coaching Courses at a cost of £430. After discussion it was agreed to award L Nicholson a contribution of £295 towards the costs involved.
5.2 STACEY DOWNIE – INDIVIDUAL MEMBER
There was submitted an application from S Downie who was seeking financial assistance with her attendance at a variety of Scottish Athletics events at a cost of £1820. It was noted some of the costs detailed on the application could not be supported by the Sports Council. After discussion it was agreed to award S Downie a contribution of £750 towards the costs involved. It was noted that S Downie will be able to re-apply later in the year for an additional £300 if she is selected for the Scotland Team in September, this will increase her grant to the full £1000.
5.3 ALISTAIR BOOTH – PEEBLES CYCLING CLUB
There was submitted an application from A Booth of Peebles Cycling Club who was seeking assistance with his attendance at a series of Mountain Bike events throughout the Country at a total cost of £510. After discussion it was agreed to award A Booth a contribution of £260 towards the costs involved.
5.4 ALAN BROWN – PEEBLES FOOTBALL CLUB
There was submitted an application from A Brown of Peebles Football Club who was seeking financial assistance with his attendance at an SFA Children’s Licence in Edinburgh at a cost of £175. After discussion it was agreed to award A Brown a contribution of £175 towards the costs involved.
7. ANY OTHER COMPETENT BUSINESS
6.1 SBC STAFF TRAINING
The Chairman intimated that he had received a letter from Brian Keenan, the Head of Schools intimating that staff training for Physical Education staff on the whole was paid for by the school up to a certain value per member of staff. He did acknowledge that the budget for each member of staff was limited and could only be used for training costs that were deemed relevant to teaching. Mr Keenan highlighted that he valued the support of the Sports Council’s when supporting teachers to obtain additional qualifications to teach extra curricular and community groups.

6.2 COSLA NEWSLETTER
The Chairman submitted a copy of the COSLA newsletter that he had received from Councillor Garvie, the COSLA spokesman for Sports and the Arts, the newsletter highlighted the increased profile of sport on the political agenda.
6.3 PEEBLES COMMUNITY SPORTS PROJECT
Mr N Cameron intimated that a meeting is to be held between the new Peebles Football Club, Peebles County Cricket Club and Peebles Hockey Club, the aim of the meeting is to discuss how to develop the playing and changing facilities in the Kerfield Playing area.
There being no further competent business the Chairman declared the meeting closed at 8.30pm
